Yes หรือ No ตอบแล้วฝรั่งไม่งง !!!

คนไทยไปตลาด ถามคนขายว่า "น้า วันนี้มีกล้วยมาขายไหม"
คนขายตอบ "ไม่มีครับ"

ถ้าถามว่า "น้า วันนี้ไม่มีกล้วยมาขายเหรอ"
คนขายตอบ "ครับ" (ไม่มีมาขาย)

ฝรั่งไปตลาด ถ้าถามว่า "Do you have any bananas?"
ตอบ "No, I do not." ไม่เป็นปัญหา

แต่ถ้าเปลี่ยนคำถามเป็น "Don't you have any bananas?"
คนไทยเราจะตอบว่า "Yes, I don't have any bananas."
แต่ถ้าคนขายเป็นฝรั่ง เขาจะตอบว่า "No, I don't have any bananas."

เห็นความแตกต่างของคำตอบจากสองคนข้างต้นมั้ยครับ

ตอบแบบคนไทย ฝรั่งจะสงสัยหรืองง
ถ้าไม่มีกล้วย ทำไมถึงตอบ yes !!!

ในแง่ของคนไทย เราตอบ yes เพราะเห็นด้วยกับคำถาม
คือ จริงอย่างที่คุณว่า -> ไม่มีกล้วยมาวันนี้

แต่ฝรั่งมองอีกแง่
ไม่ได้มองในส่วน คำถามหรือสิ่งที่ถามมา ว่าเป็นจริงหรือไม่
แต่มอง สิ่งที่เป็นจริง -> "ไม่มี" ก็ตอบว่า "no"

"Don't you have any bananas?"
ถ้าไม่มี ต้องตอบ "No, I do not have any bananas."

จำง่ายๆว่า อย่าไปสนใจ Not ในประโยคคำถาม ^___^

ถ้าถามว่า Do you have any mangoes?
หรือ Don't you have any mangoes?
ถ้ามีก็ตอบ Yes, I do.
ถ้าไม่มีก็ตอบ No, I don't.

ถ้าถามว่า Do you have a football?
หรือ Don't you not have a football?
ถ้าไม่มีต้องตอบว่า No เพราะไม่มี

แล้ว Positive กับ Negative questions ต่างกันยังไงหละ?
Practical English Usage ให้คำตอบไว้ดังนี้ครับ

Negative questions มีความหมายได้ 2 แบบ ดังนี้
1.) "It's true that ...., isn't it?"
A negative question can ask for confirmation of a positive belief.
In this case the question expects the answer Yes,
and means "It's true that ...., isn't it?"
เช่น
Didn't you go and see Helen yesterday? How is she?
(= I believe you went and saw Helen yesterday ....)

Expressions of opinion can be made less definite by expressing them as negative questions
(so that they ask for agreement).
Wouldn't it be better to switch the lights on?

Negative questions of this kind are common in exclamations and rhetorical questions.
Isn't it a lovely day!
She's growing up to be a lovely person. ~Yes, isn't she!
Isn't the answer obvious? (= Of course the answer is obvious.)

2.) "Is it true that ... not ...?"
A negative question can also ask for confirmation of a negative belief.
In this case the question expects the answer No,
and means "Is it true that ... not ...?"
Don't you feel well? (= Am I right in thinking you don't feel well?)
Oh, dear. Can't they come this evening?

This kind of negative question can show that the speaker is surprised that
something has not happened or is not happening.
Hasn't the postman come yet?
Didn't the alarm go off? I wonder what's wrong with it.
